If you are sick and tired of junk emails that eat up your work days and tie up your computer time, there are a few things you can do to help. Many email software programs can use the junk feature to eliminate some of the spam we get, but it is never 100% effective. Some of the ways you surf the Internet can cause you to get more junk email.
One solution is not to provide your email address to any company that you do not intend to do business with. Though most companies will ask for you your email address, many reputable companies will let you skip this step. If it is necessary, they will provide an explanation for why it is necessary. Legitimate companies will also provide you with a privacy policy. Most will allow you to check or uncheck a box that permits them to share your contact information with other companies. This box is sometimes already checked, and you must uncheck it in order to prevent them from sharing it with others. Always read all the fine print before providing your contact information online.
Another way to prevent junk email from ending up in your Inbox is to set up an email account to provide when you are searching online. Many providers offer free email accounts, such as Yahoo and Hotmail. Having an email account to provide online will allow you not to give your work email to purveyors of solicitations and spam. You can go into the account from time to time just to make sure nothing important got sent there, but for the most part you can just leave it alone.
